9. Installation using a horizontal
register plate
Horizontal register plates are often
used to close off a large inglenook fireplace and may be cut
to an irregular shape with tinsnips so that they fit perfectly
into the stonework.
XXBefore
cutting the register plate you make an accurate template using
stiff cardboard, then transfer the shape onto the metal.
XXTo
provide access for soot you cut a rectangular hole through the
plate at any suitable location and cover it with a loose piece
of heavy steel plate.
XXAt
best, this arrangement can be extremely messy and when wood or
peat are being burned there is every prospect of condensation
leaking back down through the plate.
XXA
far better technique is to install a flexible multifuel liner
into the chimney and bring it down through the register
plate to a short section of cast iron flue pipe (or vitreous
fluepipe) that connects directly onto the stove.
